Most skiers and snowboarders have heard of Red Mountain Resort, but in some respects it is still an undiscovered ski destination. The few that do know about the wonders of Red enjoy the major benefits of the uncrowded slopes. Another drawcard for Red is the incredibly friendly and laid back vibe of the resort and the nearby town of Rossland. Red Mountain is about 3 kilometres from Rossland in British Columbia, just inside the Canadian border, 3.5 hours from Kelowna International Airport, or just 30 minutes from Castlegar Regional Airport. The Red Resort ski area is compact but it packs a lot into the 683 hectares and 890 metres of vertical. There is beginner terrain and plenty of intermediate cruisers, but the main bias of the resort is towards expert riders.. The two mountains within the resort (Red Mountain and Granite Mountain) are serviced by six slow lifts, and mid-week you will pretty much have the lifts and terrain to yourself. In addition to the in-bounds terrain, there are also stacks of easily accessed backcountry runs. The advantage of skiing Red is you get great bang for your buck! Accommodation, lift tickets, beverages and food are very inexpensive, so skiing and snowboarding at Red Mountain is very attractive for families, ski bums and anyone else who is happy to keep money in their pocket.
